Steinmandlspitze (2347m) from Fernpass

Technical difficulty: 5/10
Fitness: 5/10
Objective danger: 5/10
(some avalanche-exposed sections; careful route choice needed)
Landscape: 9/10
Busy: 3/10

A quiet ski tour away from the Fernpass crowds: first a surprisingly peaceful valley approach through the Kälbertal, then—once you reach the Galtberghütte—big open bowls with lots of options. The summit gives a proper panorama toward the Lechtal Alps, Zugspitze massif, and Mieminger Kette.

Route

From the parking at the last right-hand bend, drop a few meters onto the forest track and head north, following the stream: first through forest, later through a flat gravel basin to the entrance of the Kälbertal. Then continue deeper into the valley on the clearly visible forest road.

Near the back of the valley (around Hinterer Pirchboden), climb the open slopes on the right side of the valley briefly northward. Around 1650 m, traverse left across steeper terrain, cross a gully, and climb diagonally out to the small Galtberghütte

From the hut, follow the track (shared direction toward Roter Stein at first) about 100 vertical meters to a blocking rock band. Then trend left onto a rib and traverse west into the broad cirque south east below Steinmandlspitze. Skin up through the bowl in many switchbacks, aiming for a distinct notch with a striking rock needle

The notch tightens and steepens near the top. Depending on conditions you continue on skis or on foot (often on the west side of the south ridge) to the summit.

Descent

Usually you ski back along the ascent line, but the tour is famous for options if the snowpack is stable:

  • Directly down the broad summit face back toward Galtberghütte (only with very safe conditions).

  • From near the hut, there are steeper couloirs/runs dropping into the valley floor on the right side (again: only when conditions are right).

  • A spicier variant is continuing a bit along the ridge and dropping the steep east slope into the cirque between Steinmandlspitze and Roter Stein.
