Judenkopf round
Technical difficulty: 5/10
Fitness: 5/10
Objective danger: 3/10
Landscape: 7/10
Busy: 5/10 (10/10 on the way down from Neue Alpihütte)
A good early season loop with good variety of runnable and technical sections.
Starting point: Spielplatz Wildermieming
Ending point: Spielplatz Wildermieming
Length: 21km
Vertical: 1600m
Speed: mostly runnable trails. some technical sections on the ridge.
Route:
We start off from the parking lot, running through a new family home development of Wildermieming Siedlung and to the other side of it. We connect to a forest road leading through the fields to the next village of Obermieming for a couple of kilometers. Here a trail turns of north and starts climbing very gently towards the big mountains visible in front of us. This trail is quite long and the slight incline makes it hard work.
After a few kilometers the forest road turns east, crosses the river and then starts following the south flank of the mountain eastwards. We cross another river on this forest road - Judenbach - before reaching an intersection. A small trail splits of to the north here and starts climbing very steeply upwards. It doesn’t really let it up for about 1000 vertical meters, eventually getting out of the forest and through the low alpine growth and a rocky ridge to the summit of Judenkopf (2020m). We get awesome 360 degree views from here to the Inn valley on one side and the Miemminger Kette mountain range to the north.
From the summit, we retrace our steps for a few hundred meters and take the trail east, traversing the south flank of the mountain on a narrow trail - Brennsteig. The trail cuts across the whole mountain before turning north, traversing into the Alpbach valley and towards the Neue Alpihütte. The hut is a great place for a break and just 15min extra to our route.
We, however, continue down the valley, following a smooth trail by the river. For a few kilometers, the route gets extremely busy, as the hut is a very popular walking destination. Luckily, after a few kilometers we veer off from the river and do a short extra uphill towards Schäfferhütte - a small private hut. From here most of the climbing is done and we follow a long runnable descent back towards Wildermieming and the parking lot.
